North Carolina is the only state in the country with the right to education written into its Bill of Rights. The Constitutional Tales project tells the stories of how this came to be.
The education provisions in North Carolina’s current constitution are rooted in the reconstruction-era constitution of 1868. The Tales include stories of people from this period who worked for the constitutional right to education and explain how African Americans played a key role in advocating for and leading in the creation of public schools.
